As you may know, using a bath that has a blockage is really only making the blockage bigger. Bath blockages are mainly hair and everything else that gets sucked down the plug hole, bound together with soap scum. Continuing to use a bath that's already partly blocked just adds more material to the existing blockage.

Hair tangles together at the U-bend trap directly below the plug hole. Soap scum — particularly from bar soaps that contain fats — binds the hair into a solid mat. After enough time, water can't get past, and that's when the bath starts holding water.

Boiling water down the drain (provided it's a modern bath with plastic waste; cast-iron with lead joints — call us instead).

Bicarbonate of soda + white vinegar — half a cup of each, leave for 15 minutes, flush with hot water. Surprisingly effective on early-stage hair blockages.

Plunger over the plug hole, with the overflow blocked with a damp cloth so suction works properly.

Don't use a wire coat hanger or anything rigid — easy to damage older waste pipes and turn a quick fix into a replacement.

Most bath blockages are at the trap directly below the plug hole. We disconnect the trap, clear the hair mat, scrub the inside clean, refit and test. Ten to fifteen minutes for a standard household bath.

For deeper blockages further down the waste pipe — usually older properties where multiple bathroom fittings share a single run — we'll use a motorised drain auger to follow the pipe and clear the blockage at source.
